Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI)’s Public Hotline and Litigation Project

NIF’s flagship grantee, ACRI, has been at the forefront of Israeli civil society and the fight for democracy and equality for more than four decades.

Its public hotline receives more than 3,000 calls each year from migrants, people without status, Palestinian residents of Israel, East Jerusalem and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, welfare recipients, immigrants, people who identify as LGBTQ and more. Fielded by a team of volunteers, legal interns and lawyers, the hotline dispenses legal advice, provides referrals and makes recommendations to callers.

ACRI enables callers to assert and realise their rights when confronted with powerful offenders like corporations, local authorities or the state.

Around a third of calls each year are referred to other organisations – many of them NIF Australia grantees, like the Hotline for Refugees and Migrants – while another third are taken up by ACRI for action. ACRI initiates court petitions in about five of these cases each year.

Bizchut – The Civil Rights Centre for People with a Disability

Bizchut is Israel's leading and longest running organisation devoted to promoting the rights of people who have disabilities in Israel.

By funding Bizchut's human rights hotline, we're able to affect the lives of 90 people with a disability and their families – including those with physical, sensory and intellectual disabilities – to ensure they have access to crucial services, achieve independence and equality and reduce abuse and neglect.

Each year, the hotline provides legal aid services, offering ongoing assistance and guidance using a range of interventions to solve their problems, including legal representation in court.

Hashomer Hatzair (Project for Refugees in Ukraine and Poland)

OREK

OREK establishes, accompanies and unites groups, of mutual social and economic guarantee, of people without family support. These are people who live without backing, which means they deal with the world alone. OREK works with those, who are at high risk of dependency (Social Security benefits, public housing and welfare), and opens a door to a life of capability, independence and social, emotional and economic security. This way, OREK enables a sustainable reduction of gaps in the Israeli society, helps the realisation of personal and social potential, and promotes equal opportunities and widespread distribution of wealth.

The Summit Institute

The Summit Institute was established in 1973 and has since been initiating, developing, and promoting the provision of rehabilitation services for about 600 individuals coping with mental disabilities, within the community, annually. Since 2003, we are also operating foster care services in Jerusalem and in Southern Israel, serving 1,400 foster children and 900 foster families.

In the wake of the horrific attacks in the South of Israel on October 7, NIF is proud to support The Summit Institute's program that serves some of the most vulnerable of the victims of this tragedy.
